The Postal Index Number (PIN), commonly known as the Pincode, is the postal code system used by India Post. A PIN code consists of 6 digits: the first digit represents the region, the second the sub-region, the third the sorting district, and the last three digits indicate the specific post office. India is divided into nine PIN code zones for efficient mail distribution.

To simplify and streamline the delivery process, India Post introduced the 6-digit PIN code system on 15 August 1972.
